Extraordinary Emerson

We find ourselves in a transformative and challenging moment for higher education, as colleges and universities across the country navigate unprecedented scrutiny and pressure. In this era of uncertainty, it has never been more important for us to embrace our shared values, draw strength from our collective spirit, and unite with purpose to make a lasting and meaningful impact on our community and the world beyond.

At Emerson, we remain committed to our belief in the power of education in the arts and communication to inspire, elevate, and connect. Every day, we equip our students with the tools they need to lead extraordinary lives while enriching communities and advancing a more just and vibrant society. Through creative expression and authentic communication, Emersonians bridge divides and foster common ground in an increasingly fragmented world.

Today, more than ever, the world needs Emerson—and it needs Emersonians—to lead with vision, courage, and compassion.

This spring, we reaffirmed our commitment to that vital calling through the launch of Extraordinary Emerson 2030, the College’s new strategic plan. This bold, forward-looking roadmap results from a remarkable collective effort, shaped by the ideas, insights, and aspirations of our faculty, staff, students, alumni, parents, supporters, and industry partners. I am deeply grateful to all who contributed to this inspiring endeavor, which will confidently and ambitiously guide our College as we approach Emerson’s 150th anniversary in 2030.

The launch of Extraordinary Emerson 2030 was just one of many highlights this semester. In January, we gathered in the Bobbi Brown and Steven Plofker Gym to dedicate and name the basketball court in honor of former men’s basketball coach Hank Smith (see p. 19), celebrating a legacy of leadership, mentorship, and impact. We also embarked on the community-wide Emerson Branding Initiative, an exciting effort to reimagine how we tell the story of our College’s enduring spirit and evolving future. Throughout the spring, we proudly celebrated the talent and creativity of our students—at the Gold Key Honor Society Induction Ceremony; at the 44th Annual EVVY Awards; and at Commencement, the ultimate tribute to the extraordinary journeys of our graduates.

When I reflect on the energy, creativity, and determination that have defined our campus this semester—and on the inspiring work Emersonians are undertaking around the globe, as captured in the pages of this magazine—I am filled with hope. Whatever challenges and opportunities lie ahead, I have every confidence that Emersonians will continue to rise, to lead, and to make a difference.

I am proud to be an Emersonian and deeply honored to serve an institution whose mission, vision, and values light the way forward. Thank you for everything you do to strengthen, support, and uplift this extraordinary community.
